Chibi YouTube Thumbnail Generator

Build a thumbnail that still works at 320 pixels wide. Upload a character photo, convert it into a bold chibi style, and place the character on one side with a clear emotional expression. Leave the other side empty for a headline you add later. The goal is a readable composition, not a detailed illustration.

How to create a chibi YouTube thumbnail

  1. 1Upload a character or presenter photo with a clear face.
  2. 2Choose one emotion and place the character on one side of a 16:9 frame.
  3. 3Check the image at thumbnail size, then add your headline in an editor.

Design for the smallest size first

A thumbnail is usually seen small, on a phone, next to competing videos. One face, one emotion, and one strong background color will outperform a detailed scene. Shrink the image to thumbnail size before you judge it. If the expression disappears, simplify.

Place the character on one side and keep the other side calm for text. Avoid placing important features near the edges, because the platform may crop the image in different layouts. Leave a margin around the character’s head and hands.

What makes a chibi thumbnail readable

Bold outlines, a limited palette, and a clear silhouette help. Choose a background that contrasts with the character’s hair and clothing. If the character has dark hair, use a warm or light background; if the character is light, use a deep background.

Use one exaggerated emotion: surprise, focus, joy, or disbelief. Add one simple prop only if it explains the video topic. A cluttered thumbnail with five objects and three arrows is harder to read than a single face with a strong expression.

Add the headline outside the generator

Generate the artwork with empty space, then add the headline in a design tool. This lets you control the font, contrast, and length. Keep the headline to three to five words and test it at mobile size.

Export a 16:9 master image and keep the layered design file if you have one. Reuse the same character style across a series so viewers recognize the channel, but change the expression and background color to match each video.

Prompt examples

Keep one emotion, one character, and one empty headline area.

  • Make a YouTube thumbnail from this character photo. Keep the face recognizable, use a surprised expression, place the character on the right, and leave a clean dark area on the left for a headline.

  • Create a gaming thumbnail with this chibi character. Use a deep purple and cyan gradient, add energetic speed lines, keep the character on the left, and leave the right side uncluttered for text.

  • Design a tutorial thumbnail from this photo. Keep the person recognizable in chibi style, use a warm cream background, add simple floating icons, and leave the center-right area empty for a title.

Chibi YouTube thumbnail FAQ

  1. 1

    What size is the thumbnail?

The workspace uses a 16:9 composition, which matches standard YouTube thumbnails. Export the largest available resolution and resize to 1280 × 720 if your editor requires exact dimensions.

  2. 2

    Can I use a real person’s photo?

Only with that person’s permission. If the thumbnail represents a real person, do not imply a false endorsement or use it misleadingly. Keep the source photo and the person’s consent on file.

  3. 3

Why should I add text outside the generator?

Generated text is often misspelled, badly kerned, or unreadable at small sizes. Adding the headline in a design tool gives you control over the font, contrast, and length, and makes it easy to update later.

  4. 4

Can I make a matching series?

Yes. Keep the same prompt structure, background style, and character treatment, and change only the emotion, prop, and accent color. A consistent series is easier to recognize in a crowded feed.
